I’m trying to price a Meucci Original O series Piano cue. A friend of mine has one in fairly good shape but is asking almost $2000.00 for it. I just don’t want to get took.

Jason,
Judging the value of Meucci cues, especially the older ones, can be a bit tricky. Mainly because so many people have an emotional attachment to them. This causes them to be over-valued a lot of times, IMHO. I have no emotional attachment to them, so I’ll try to give you an unbiased opinion. I’ll give you a couple of different perspectives….

First, I don’t really prefer the playability of Meucci Cues, so I would never spend $2000 for a Meucci Playing cue. Of course, you may feel differently, so you’ll have to be the judge there.
Second, I start to think about ALL of the $2,000 cues out there for sale and there are some gorgeous cues that play really well (not to mention superior craftsmanship)
Third and most importantly, I’ve seen this same cue selling for MUCH less than $2k. Here is one that was listed for $600. Here is another listed for $500 and may still be available see #14. I saw another “mint” a while back for $1,000 and another signed by Danny Medina selling for $900. Keep looking for a good deal. These cues are out there. Many people think some Meucci cues are more rare than they actually are. Also, just being older or rare doesn’t make them valuable. What someone is willing to pay is all that makes them valuable. I don’t know if any of these cues sold for their asking price. They could all still be UNSOLD.
Be careful and, you’re right, don’t get took.
Good Luck!!

Skippy,

I have a meucci original, blue, trying to find details and value. It looks like an E-5, but has block lettered “Meucci Original”.

I would like to send you picture as well, but need an email address for you.

Thanks,
Roger

Skippy,
I was just wondering can an OB-Classic Pro Shaft fit pretty much any cue as long as you get the pin size right? I have a McDermott right now with a G-core shaft and it’s great, but i’m looking for another good cue and I love the way the OB hits. Since I’m looking for another cue, would you have any good suggestions on what I should look at? I was looking at a Meucci 9710BD and was wondering if the shaft on that would be considered better than an OB or am I headed in the right direction on trying to find a good new cue an OB would fit on? I’d appreciate any advice/suggestions you have.
P.S.- The Meucci 9710BD is around the price range I’m trying to work with and i know the OB would add a little more to that cost. Thanks!

Tyler,
First your question about the OB/pin size. Yes, it should fit if the pin size/thread is the same. You may find that the outside diameter of the butt and shaft won’t be an exact match. When you screw the cue together, you may feel a slight difference in size where they meet. The only way to guarantee a good fit is to have a cuemaker custom fit a shaft to your cue. McDermott might be able to do this for you.
Regarding the OB feel, this is a tough question to answer, because feel of the shafts you mentioned is very much a matter of personal preference. I can give you MY opinion, but you may have a much different desire when it comes to how your cue hits.
That being said, I would say that the OB is a better shaft than the BD, IMO. I’ve never played with the G-core, so I can’t really comment on that.
Based on the prices of Meucci 9710 and OB shafts, you are looking to spend about $500 to $600…correct?
Just my opinion, but for this much money I would go with a low-end custom cue and have the cuemaker fit an OB shaft.
If I were going the production cue route, I definitely would strongly recommend a Schon or Pechauer cue over McDermott or Meucci. I think the quality and hit of those cues are much better. The hit of the factory shafts on those cues, especially the pechauer, are probably better than the g-core or BD shafts.
Again, these things are all subjective so take that for what it is worth. I think the craftsmanship of the Schon and Pechauer are superior, though.
I hope this helps in some way. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Cheers,
Skippy

Hey Skippy,
First of all thanks for the helpful feedback. I really think I’ve decided on the Schon CX-75 and i also just purchased a NEW 3/8-10 OB1 Pool Cue Shaft Fit Mcdermott 12.75mm ob. It was on a link on your site and it was or sounded like a reputable dealer on eBay. There was also a link that said they have OBs that fit schons, pechauer, and McDermott cues. I sure hope these are the real deals. Of course I’ll try thre stock shaft of the Schon CX-75. To me it looks pretty nice. Not too flashy. My taste. Tell me what u think about this OB deal links on your site. I just thought I’d try it out for my McDermott first and it should fit hopefully. Well let me know what you think of my choice and thanks again for the feedback Skippy.

Tyler,
Congrats on picking the Schon CX75 cue. I think you’ll really like it. Let me know how the OB shaft fits your McDermott and if you like how it plays. I’d love to hear about it.
Concerning the OB dealer links on my site, it’s hard for me to say if any ebay dealer is reputable. I would strongly suggest that you check out the feedback to get a feel for how they do business. That is what I do. I think you will do fine, though. Probably, the best prices on OB shafts that you’ll anywhere.
Keep in touch and let me know how you like the Schon and how it compares to the McDermott/OB combo.
Cheers,
Skippy

I have located an LHi Muecci’s Larry Hubbart Cue (sold originally by Cornhuskers billard supply). On http://www.discountpoolcuess.com/larry hubbart meucci cues .htm 5 pictures of this cue are supplied on this website which is exactly the same cue I have. According to the website the Hubbart cue is very rare. I have no use for the cue and would like to sell it. (The discount etc. website pictures are from a collector and their :H1 cue is not for sale.) Need some help or advice. Thanks you inadvance for your help. Best Regards, CW

Skippy, I purchased a Jim Rempe by Meucci cue from a relative about 20 years ago. I’m guessing the cue was manufactured in the 1970′s. I’ve been trying to research the cue the last few years and have yet to see another like it. Could I email you pictures to see if you have seen this one anywhere before?

Short of contacting Meucci directly I don’t know where else to research.

Thanks

Coleman,
This cue looks like a Meucci JR-1 (Jimmy Rempe Model) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/RLW/Meucci-Jim-Rempe-Series-2.jpg . I’m not sure if it is a 1970′s model. If I had to guess, I would guess early to mid-80′s model. Most people would agree that the Meucci cues from that era are of a higher quality than the ones made today. I don’t think it is all that rare, though, from looking at your photo.
As far as value goes, that is a little tricky. The only way to really tell is to put it up for sale and see what it will fetch. From watching auctions of other JR series cues from that same era, I would guess that you would only get about $225-$275 for this cue, assuming it is in good playing condition. I’ve seen some higher JR models sell for around $300 and some try to sell for more, seemingly without any interest.

I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing your cue and I wish you all the best.

Thanks for the info. I found out that the Meucci headquarters/factory is just a few miles down the road from my house. I’m going to drop by there one of these days and see if I can have a shaft fitted to this old cue as well to ask them about it’s history. If I find out anything different I’ll let you know. Thanks again!

Skippy, I own a Randy Mobley cue that he made in 2006 and was used by Rodney ( Rocket ) Morris in the IPT 2006 World Open 8 Ball Championship. I am thinking of sell it but have no clue as what it may be worth or what some one would consider paying for it. I have pictures and documentation to prove what I’ve stated.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I would be glad to post it up on my site to see if there is anyone interested. Either way, I’d love to see what you got. Feel free to send me an email with some pictures and any information that you have. I’ll help you however I can.

Hi,

I have acquired pool cue. The handle of the cue has a blue marble type finish and is wrapped in a multicolored blue thread. The markings on the bottom of the cue are Genuine over by McDermott with a large G that encases the ‘en” of the word Genuine. Can you tell me anything about this cue.

Thanks for your time and consideration,

Ken

The Paul Mottey cue you have listed. Is it still available? If so I am interested.

21 Skippy January 31, 2012 at 9:10 pm

@Robert…If you are referring to the Paul Mottey at http://www.cues.9baller.com/paul-mottey-and-schon-cue-for-sale/, no it is not available. I talked to the owner.

There are a couple of nice Paul Mottey cues (top-right of page) at http://www.cues.9baller.com/buyers-guide-paul-mottey-custom-cues/
